Spillings by Zierle & Carter

The artists are a team known as Zierle and Carter from the United Kingdom. The duo examines different forms of communication, and what it means to be a human, as a single persona and as a collective. They also explore themes, like cultural identity and societies conventions. The piece that interested me is called ‘Spillings’ and it was completed in Buenos Aires at the Plaza de Miserere in 2010.
This piece is a response to the interactions that they saw at the square on their first visit. In english the square is called the Plaza of Misery, and is known for its high crime rate. They chose the street cats to be their subjects in the performance, because with all of the other activities they go unnoticed. For this piece Zierle, was completely dressed in white and held a bag of milk in each hand. She walked out to the middle of the Plaza where her partner poked holes at the bottom of the bags. The milk started to spill out, making beautiful patterns on the ground. The street cats completed the piece by gathering around, and drinking the milk. Like their other pieces the props used in this piece serve as an extension to her body. And for this piece specifically they chose to create a ritualistic performance that echoed a peace offering, because the Plaza rests on the first Presidents tomb. The performance is documented through the video shown below.
